This month the National Junior Honor Society decided to spread the love this Valentine's Day by surprising our JMMS students with a heart attack by putting up pink, and red colored hearts. The NJHS members prepared for the event from February 7th-13th. Mrs. Conaway, their sponsor, had some of the members cutting out heart templates and trimming them. The other students wrote quotes and Valentine’s Day catchphrases.
All the preparation took place in Mrs.Conaway’s classroom D-101 and some of the members took a handful of hearts home and worked on them in their spare time. In total the members completed an estimated amount of 500 hearts. Finally, on Thursday when all the hearts were completed the NJHS team stayed after school and put up the hearts in the hallways, lockers and all around the school. Then, early before school on Valentine’s Day members finished the job and got all the hearts hung up.
Emma Aguirre, an 8th grader at James Monroe, said “ It made me feel happy because I felt appreciated and valued.”
Deandra Enriquez, a 6th grader said “It was cool, and nice of the NJHS people to do that for us.”
Maya Gatewood, also an 8th grader, said “It was really nice because some people may not have gotten anything for Valentine’s Day and they got to get something.”
The NJHS members also do other service projects similar to the heart attack. For example volunteering their time at school events like the JMMS fall festival and the Sunset View fall festival. They also volunteer two hours of their time every month to complete a service project individually. This helps them learn things like communication skills, making new friends, and helping others in need. Some of the service projects that NJHS members do are volunteering at a food pantry, helping a neighbor, friend, elderly neighbor etc. The team also did a canned food drive around the month of December. These projects all correlate to the five pillars that consider a student a member of the National Honor Society. These pillars are citizenship, leadership, service, character, and scholarship. By completing their two hours of service every month members prove themselves a NJHS member and a good role model for their fellow peers.
