James Monroe held its semi-annual book fair during Spring Conferences on 3/7 and 3/8. Schools host the Scholastic book fair twice every school year, and the purpose is to raise money for the school library, especially since the school has experienced a budget cut, and also to offer a wide selection of books to teachers, parents, and most importantly; students. According to Mrs. Shaw, the book fair gives parents and students an opportunity to pick out and read books together, this increasing the likelihood that students will continue reading. The fair gives teachers a chance to see and buy books for their classroom at a discount.
Most importantly, book fairs give students a motivation to read by offering them a wide selection of books to choose from that they can look at before they decide to buy. Sharon Shaw, James Monroe’s librarian, commented,”They give you the chance to instill a love of reading that lasts a lifetime. What could possibly be a more lasting impression?”
The book fair sold not only books, but various school supplies were sold as well, such as pencils, pens, and erasers, etc. In years past, language arts teachers have taken their classes to the book fair during school. This year, the school decided it would be better for students to come to the book fair in their own time. “I really liked all of the different kinds of books. If I could have bought them all, I would have.” says Jasmine Jewl, an 8th grade student. The book fair has provided the library to purchase $600 worth of new books for students to check out, and Mrs. Shaw believes the book fair was a success.
