In the eighth grade science classes Ms. Smith's and Mr. Liddells classes have been working on cars. They had to make a balloon powered car out of items such as cardboard, water bottles, shrimp skewers etc. In this project students paired up with partner's and had a week to work on their project and find mistakes such as not having to much weight or the wheels being aligned uneven. They were graded by whether or not the car ran, how far it went and how fast. This project was assigned in all eighth grade science classes. After that, students will be learning about the 6 simple machines. Simple machines are pulleys, levers, inclined planes, wedges, wheels and axel and lastly the screw. All of these devices are used in our everyday lives. With this new lesson Mr. Liddell is hoping to do another car that must be powered by one of the 6 simple machines.
"My favorite project that we did would have to be the balloon car race, because it was fun and a good hands on experience.” Mayci Chase a student in Mr. Liddells 1st period class.
"My favorite project for Smiths class is the car races because they were inventive and creative.” Savannah McSween a student in Ms. Smith's 5th period class.
Both teachers are wanting to do more hands on projects such as the car race. Students really seemed to enjoy it much more than most other projects completed.
