The Jazz Cafe is a night at James Monroe Middle School on Fat Tuesday from 6 to 8pm and the Jazz Band plays for the parents and students while they eat snacks and mostly have a good time watching and listening to Jazz music. It’s like a real cafe but it’s at a middle school. The Jazz Band is taught by Mr.Smith and he prepares them for the performances. The intermediate and advanced band students have an option by signing up at the beginning of the year to be in the jazz band. They practice every morning before school on weekdays but they have Fridays off. This year for the Jazz Cafe, the Taylor Middle School Jazz Band came and played with the JMMS Jazz Band. They also played their own songs that they have been practicing in the mornings.
Ms.Olson and her Foods 2 class made Mardi Gras themed food and treats to make money for the foods class. The families seemed to like all the food they made because all the food was almost gone by the end of the night. The Foods 2 class walked around with trays to pick up the trash so the families could enjoy the Jazz Band’s performance. The 8th graders really helped out a lot so Ms.Olson didn’t have to do it all by herself. The food they were selling were, Red Beans and Rice, Mardi Gras Pasta Salad, Kings Cake, and Iced Sugar Cookies.
The Jazz Cafe had an underground jazzy vibe with the lights dimmed and the tables set up in rows. The bands performed on the stage in the cafeteria and the spotlights were on them. The James Monroe Jazz Band played a few songs first, then the Taylor Middle School Jazz Band played a few songs. After the two bands played separately, they joined together and played a song together. The families enjoyed the performances and look forward to next year's Jazz Cafe.
