Aside from checking out books, the library here at James Monroe is also known for being open to students during lunch. Students have the privilege to come into the library for both A and B lunch and engage in different activities. Here one can find students playing board games, socializing, and reading. One of the most played games is chess, many students, such as Charise Sabordo enjoy the game very much. Charise said, “My favorite thing about chess is the art of strategy. I also enjoy beating people who are older than me!” Some other popular games played include Mancala, Checkers, and Sorry.
Due to the size of the library it is used for many other things aside from housing books. Having acquired new computers this school year, many teachers bring their classes to engage in testing and interactive assignments. The library is also used for staff meetings and fundraisers (such as the book fair). Once a month all middle school librarians meet up and discuss what needs to improve within library services and what is working well. Library Services is the program that every APS library uses. It is what keeps track of what students check-out and what they need to turn in.
Ms. Shaw, the librarian here at James Monroe, has been working in the library for about four years now. Before her days were filled with books, Ms. Shaw taught science at Mckinley middle school for a little over twenty years. Here at JMMS, our librarian is in charge of ALL things in relation to books; this can include ordering textbooks, tending to books in the library, and requesting new books for students to read. Ms. Shaw loves her time spent in the library and hopes to continue in the future. “Ever since I was little I’ve loved books, so I really enjoy my days in the library,” said Ms. Shaw.
The library is used for so much more than just a place to get books from. It’s a place where many can engage in some friendly competition or hop into a good book. If you’re looking for something new to read the library might have just what you’re looking for.
