The James Monroe Track Team gathers up together every week, usually on Mondays but sometimes Tuesdays, dressed in their track gear ready to perform the skills they’ve acquired throughout practice from various coaches. The student athletes receive stickers with their name, grade, and event labeled on it. Beforehand, make sure to always check the track team’s website, http://jmmstrack.wixsite.com/2017 , to see who has events and who should attend the meet. After the athletes have acquired his or her event stickers, they’ll aboard bus one or bus two depending on the events they’re performing. Students that perform the 1600-meter, the One Hundred meter dash, and High Jump should always board bus one because those are the very first events to start.
Once the bus arrive at Community or Milne stadium around 4:30p.m. the events will commence starting with the 1600-meter. While the 1600-meter is in process, the people hosting, usually high schools, will call for upcoming events such as the One Hundred meter dash, 400-meter dash, Four by One Hundred meter relay, 200-meter dash, 800 meter, and finally Four by 200 meter relay. While the running events are going on, there will be field events going on as well, such as the Long Jump, High Jump, Shot-put, and Discus. The events are continuously going on until the very end of the meet. After each event finalizes, the host will call out the first place winners in each heat by the time they ran.
“I loved being a coach for the track team this year. All of the amazing personalities made the energy and vibes great and easy to work with. We also had an amazing sixth grade team this year,” said Coach Christine Cartwright.
