The James Monroe archery team won first place at the AIM ON! Competition on Saturday March, 12th 2016. This competition was held by the National Archery in School Program (NASP). As a team they scored 2,999 points, just one point away from the top possible score! James Monroe had two competitors in the top ten for the middle school division. The two were Josh Ngo with 269 points and Jackson Cotter with 267 points, both out of 300 points.
At the competition there were over 900 competitors from all over New Mexico. It was held at the Albuquerque Convention Center and was an all-day event.
“The competition was really fun and exciting!” Josh Ngo stated.
Also, during the competition each archer got a practice round and then participated in five waves. New Mexico Game and Fish officials were there to score and supervise the event! “Hit and Miss” shooting range was sponsoring the event as well! The top girl and boy in each division also left with a new Genesis bow!
Walker Schultz said he likes the sport of archery because it’s a competitive sport and he likes the different type of bows and arrows!
Archery still is a way people hunt but is also evolving into a sport for all ages. It is a sport one can practice individually, as a school team or even if one is homeschooled, there are teams for those students too!
